It is quite commendable to see that both the public and private sectors are committed to slaying the corruption dragon that has sadly entrenched itself in the country.
An anti-corruption conference held in Nairobi last week was given a wide array of methods that can be used to combat the monster. But while it is obvious that there is goodwill to tackle the problem, it is crystal clear that this can only succeed if each and every Kenyan is involved in the war.
The focus should be on both small and large corruption. It does not matter how little or large the amount is, it is still corruption. However, we must note that as long as some individuals are treated as sacred cows the battle shall never be won. The government agencies should also operate from the same page for the fight to succeed. And as participants at the conference noted, we still have some way to go until all government arms unite and battle the menace as one. The left hand should always know what the right one is doing instead of operating at cross purposes.
It is also time culprits were named and shamed in public. Proceeds of corruption should also be seized even as we prosecute the suspects. But one thing remains clear: The fight cannot be won if we don’t all participate. It starts with every man and woman right from the grassroots to the top.
