Flight tickets to South Coast and Kisumu have gone up significantly since the resumption of domestic flights in July, highlighting an increase in demand for passengers seeking air travel.

A one-way ticket to Ukunda is now going at Sh14,900 on weekends with same going for Sh6,900 to Kisumu on Jambojet.

The fares have remarkably been going up since the opening of the beaches at the coastal town following the closure that had been occasioned by the Covid-19.

“When you see the fares going up it simply means that there is an increase in demand especially towards the weekend,” said Ndegwa Karanja, Jambojet chief executive.

He, however, said the demand is not at the level where they were last year.

The fares have gone up from a low of Sh8,900 to Ukunda in August and Sh4,500 to Kisumu in the same month.

Kenya Airways charges Sh7,120 to Mombasa on weekends, up from Sh4,815 that it charged when it started local flights in July with Skyward Express levying Sh8,950 for a one-way to Ukunda.

Fares tend to go up on Fridays as a lot of people fly either home or for holiday at the weekend to these destinations.

Jambojet recently received approval from the regulator to fly between Kisumu and Mombasa and from Mombasa to other international routes such as Bujumbura and Kigali.

Mr Ndegwa said they are not opening up the international route soon because of low demand in the region.

The approval came at a time when the aviation industry is in turmoil following the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 that saw airlines around the world grounded.
