Top hospitals in Nairobi have stepped-up expansion of clinics for children, responding to rising demand in the specialised healthcare segment.

In the latest development, privately owned AAR Hospital has opened a new paediatric centre joining Aga Khan University Hospital (Akuh), Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), Nairobi Hospital, Karen Hospital, and Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital that have recently expanded their children healthcare units.

“The hospital's investments reflect a strategic response to patient needs, ensuring they provide specialised care for all demographics while adapting to evolving demands," AAR Hospital Chief Executive Officer Aysha Edwards said about the medical service provider's expanded paediatric hospital on Nairobi’s Kiambu road.

Akuh recently upgraded its in-patient children's ward to boost services while Getrudes is currently constructing a new 19-bed ward to boost the capacity of its children’s hospital in Nairobi’s Muthaiga area.

“This project reflects our commitment to expanding specialised paediatric care,” Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital CEO, Robert Nyarango said on December 18, 2024, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the 19-bed Kantaria ward.

Another healthcare provider, Nairobi Women's Hospital has also expanded from women's health to provide comprehensive paediatric care, including surgery and emergency services.

Karen Hospital too has expanded its paediatric services with specialist clinics and diagnostic facilities, while Nairobi Hospital has invested in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units.

Dr Edwards said that AAR’s new paediatric centre covers a range of services including dermatology, nephrology, gastroenterology, neonatology, neurology, haemato-oncology, surgery, and cardiology among others.

"The focus is on offering high-quality care that also attracts higher-income individuals. We aim to serve diverse demographics," Dr Edwards said.

The increased demand for pediatric healthcare comes amid growing cases of childhood diseases, congenital disorders, and developmental delays, prompting the need for specialised services.
