Mecer’s stylish Xpress Business tablet ideal for first-time buyers

Mecer has entered the tablet PC market in earnest with the launch of a stylish Xpress Business tablet (pictured). For the enthusiastic consumer considering a first-time tablet PC purchase, 2011 is providing a flood of exciting new options.

The 990-gramme Xpress Business tablet offers a compelling set of features including an 11.6 inch LCD screen, built in camera, wi-fi and optional 3G.

The Xpress runs on Windows7 and offers full support for Microsoft Office and a “Hotkey” application which not only supports personal media (such as music, movies and photos), but has embedded Social Media support as well.

The Xpress tablet’s large screen is optimised for a resolution of 1366 x 768 and the built-in “discrete” video accelerator can display HD videos in true 1080p. You would not be limited to watching videos on the tablet itself, because the mini-HDMI slot allows you to connect a larger monitor to the tablet.

This high resolution screen makes the Xpress a comfortable full-screen e-reader and, together with the gyroscope, allows for motion gaming. The camera is limited and is being touted as a webcam, it only offers 1.3 mega-pixel fixed focus with resolution of 640×480 pixels. Mecer’s Xpress Business entry into the Kenya market follows a recent influx of Apple’s ipad and Samsung galaxy tab look alike mainly from China but which has not attracted serious following, especially from the corporate sector that is normally the first target of any vendor with such a pricy gadget.

Its entry, analysts say, may have some impact on the iPad and Samsung galaxy— but only if it matches the two market leaders in functionality.

“Price can be an issue but end users will be more interested in the gadget’s performance more than anything else,” said Mr Joshua Mogire of Mobile Digital Appliances. “We have seen many of the ipad look -alikes but despite their low prices, they have failed to make a hit.”

The Xpress is available in East Africa Via appointed channel partners and goes for Sh67,000.
