Safaricom is targeting big shopping malls, SMEs and government agencies across the country to speed uptake of its wireless Internet service as a strategy for cutting reliance on its voice revenue.

The telco is already offering wireless Internet services popularly known as Wi-Fi on commuter vehicles and by extending it to commercial buildings it will be taking competition to the doorsteps of Google, which has partnered with Wananchi to offer the service in entertainment joints.

Telkom Kenya is also targeting county governments and learning institutions with the service.

Voice is still the largest source of Safaricom’s revenue, accounting for 62 per cent (Sh86.3 billion) in the year ended to March. However going forward, Safaricom says the growth will be driven by data, SMS and M-Pesa.
