Kenyans vote in Dar and Kampala

Kenyans living in Tanzania and Uganda voted in the General Election, the first time those residing outside the country were allowed to exercise the right.

The Constitution enacted in 2010 allows people living in the diaspora to vote from their bases abroad. However, logistical challenges meant only those living in East Africa could be catered for.

Kenyans living in Tanzania voted at the High Commission in Oyster bay, Arusha.

The Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) presiding officer Peter Sang said half of the 720 voters registered at the station had voted by early afternoon.

In Uganda, the exercise was held at the Kenya High Commission in Kampala. IEBC presiding officer Jacqueline Wambui said there were 960 registered voters.

But the voters in Tanzania and Uganda were only allowed to elect a president.

Ms Wambui said at least 10 people were turned away because their names were missing from the Uganda roll and were advised to go to polling stations where they were registered.

Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) Executive Secretary Sylvester Arinaitwe who was an election observer said Uganda also needs to allow its citizens in the diaspora to vote and to register voters electronically like in Kenya.
