Single tourist visa launched in Kampala

What you need to know:

  • Under the new changes, a tourist is free to proceed to all the three states after obtaining visa from the first state of entry.
  • The first state entered automatically takes $10 with the rest being shared equally among the three states.

Tourists visiting Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda will now need a single instead of multiple visas to tour the three East African countries. This follows the launch of a $100 East African Tourist Visa by the regional heads of states in Kampala on Friday.

In the past, a tourist required separate visa for each country visited in a time-consuming process that discouraged visitors from extending their expedition beyond national borders.

Under the new changes, a tourist is free to proceed to all the three states after obtaining visa from the first state of entry. The first state entered automatically takes $10 with the rest being shared equally among the three states.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta launched the tourist regional visa that is expected to reduce the bureaucracies involved in getting multiple visas.

President Kenyatta said the single regional tourist visa marked the beginning of free movement of goods and person in the region.

President Kenyatta and President Kagame used their national identity cards to travel to Uganda in a symbolic gesture that citizens of the three countries do not require passports or temporary passes to cross borders.

Ugandans, who have no identity cards, will use voters cards when crossing over to Kenya and Rwanda.
