Transporters block highway over Mlolongo weighbridge

Dozens of transporters blocked the Mombasa-Nairobi highway (A109) near the Mlolongo weighbridge on Monday to protest the closing of access roads.

The protest caused a major snarl-up on the highway with transporters parking lorries used to ferry sand in the middle of the road near the weighbridge.

Police used tear-gas to disperse the protesters before clearing the highway.

The transporters were protesting the closure of access roads adjacent to the highway by police. They claimed police have been demanding bribes from them since the roads were closed.

Police, however, said the transporters have been using the roads to avoid making payments at the weighbridge.

The protest came a day after two Members of Parliament made a scene at the Gilgil weighbridge on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway (A104).
