Robert Downey Jr. is back in the cinematic universe, this time portraying one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, Dr. Doom.
This exciting development coincides with the announcement of the next two Avengers movies, which will be directed by the Russo brothers.
The Russo brothers previously directed some of the most successful Marvel movies, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
This weekend saw the release of Disney and Marvel’s first R-rated superhero movie since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. This film features a character who, in the movie trailers, claimed to be Marvel’s Jesus.
Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine is a 2024 American superhero comedy film based on Marvel Comics, featuring the characters Deadpool and Wolverine.
Produced by Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).
The film is directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.
Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Aaron Stanford, and Matthew Macfadyen.
There are also other surprises I won’t spoil for those who haven’t seen the movie yet.
Synopsis
Deadpool’s peaceful existence is disrupted when the Time Variance Authority recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse. He soon teams up with Wolverine to complete the mission and save the world from an existential threat.
A comic book movie
Let's call it what it is, this movie is just pure unadulterated fanservice. From the tone to the costumes, action set pieces, and action poses.
For those who have been there from the begining, there are numerous cameos from familiar superheroes from the late 1990s and 2000s, the ones who were before Marvel became Marvel Studios, and they are well-integrated into the narrative.
The film’s creators clearly listened to what the fans wanted. Some of the poses (starting from the title card) could easily be used as comic book art.
The hyper-violent and fast-paced action sequences are clearly inspired by the comics, especially when Deadpool fights Wolverine.
Superhero themes in this movie are colourfully dresssed, touching on what it means to be a superhero and the idea of forgotten heros.
Wolverine
Seven years after announcing his retirement, Hugh Jackman returns to a role he has played for over 20 years. While “Logan” provided a perfect ending for the character, Jackman’s performance in this movie is one of its highlights.
This version of Wolverine works well because his arc is perfectly interwoven with Deadpool’s and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There are somber and emotional moments amidst the mayhem that showcase Jackman’s acting abilities.
The multiverse concept allows us to see different versions of the characters, and Loki as a premise helped bring Deadpool and wolverine into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Deadpool DNA
Despite the move from Fox to Disney after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, this is still a Deadpool movie and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is incredible.
It features hyper-violence, profanity, exceptional use of music, crude humor, meta jokes, fourth-wall breaking, and self-awareness—all familiar tropes from the previous movies.
Standout elements include the use of flashbacks during the opening and keeping Wade Wilsons Motivation and arc clear.
Nitpicks
This movie is entertaining whether you’re a comic book fan or not, with easy-to-follow plot, character motivations, and arcs.
However, if you’ve never followed the Marvel movies from the beginning, you might not have the best experience.
It may also take time for those who haven’t seen “Loki” to understand some concepts. The strong language and hyper-violence make this unsuitable for children.
Conclusion
This movie (in the writing) exemplifies what happens when passionate, creative people listen to fans.
The action is fantastic, the performances are great, especially from Hugh Jackman. Even if you’re not a superhero movie fan, there’s enough humor and comic book-style action to keep you engaged.
The music is powerful, especially during the final act, and the movie will either make you laugh or keep a smile on your face.
