House hunters ditch expensive agents for WhatsApp groups

The need for a platform to crowdsource housing information in the city persisted, since rogue agents were taking advantage of desperate house hunters.

Derrick Momanyi’s introduction to the city’s housing struggle was harsh. The 25-year-old software developer, who has lived in Nairobi his entire life, planned to move out of his parents' home earlier this year after securing a job.

“Looking for a house is hectic. I spent the first two months of the year physically visiting places I liked with no success,” he says.
He is a regular user of TikTok and X social platforms.
