Three months to go to the start of the wedding season, Wambui Mukenyi has released her second collection of bridal wear: wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses.

“This collection was inspired by ‘a girl’s best friend’. We have used pearls, sequins and lace which are usually favourites for any girl,” said the designer.

This collection has 28 looks: 12 gowns, 10 bridesmaid and six flower girl dresses. Although colours depend on one’s individual wedding colour scheme, Wambui choose off-white, ivory and champagne colours for the gowns and for the dresses. “We used the colours that most of the brides seem to be drawn to, which are the off-whites and champagne,” she said.

Being the most important garment in a woman’s life, Wambui is ready to listen and create a gown that the wearer will be comfortable walking down the aisle in, and which she can wear well into the night.

Evening gown

As it is normal practise for the bride to change before going for the evening party, this collection saves them that hassle as the gowns are made in such a way that she only has to remove the skirt.

This transforms the voluminous gown into an elegant evening dress. This hassle-free transformation is in line with what the Wambui Mukenyi brand is known for – elegant chic with a bit of an edge.

“A bride should come to order a gown three months to the wedding day as we prefer to custom make it to suit her body and personality. This ensures that the gown is not made in a rush,” she said.

From the first collection, she learnt what her customers wanted. This time around, she has concentrated on the mermaid and Cinderella silhouettes, and is using lace, tulle, sequin fabrics and mac satin as the main fabrics.

Depending mostly on the fabric, gowns costs between Sh35,000 and Sh100,000 while the bridesmaids dresses start from Sh8,500 to Sh15,000.
