The government is mulling leasing idle public land to youth for agriculture in a bid to create jobs and improve the country’s food security, Agriculture CS Peter Munya has revealed.

Mr Munya said that this will also help attract investment into the agribusiness sector.

“We have been working on a leasing model for idle government land to be utilised for food production,” Mr Munya said.

Official data shows that 10 percent of Kenya’s land is owned by the government in protected areas, rivers as well as institutions. Others are trust land (70 percent) and freehold land (20 percent).

“This in the long run will help feed the nation, reduce food prices as well as expand productivity,” said Mr Munya.

The boom in the real estate sector has made it difficult for youth and investors in the agribusiness sector to secure affordable land for leasing in peri-urban areas.
