Tullow finds first oil traces in Kerio Valley

UK exploration firm Tullow Oil says prospects for oil in Kenya have risen after it encountered first signs in Kerio Valley.

The hydrocarbons mixed with sand were the first outside Turkana.

“Hydrocarbon shows were encountered in Kodos-1, which indicates the presence of an active petroleum system,” said Tullow Oil in a statement.

Kodos-1 is located in the Kerio Basin, which is north east of the South Lokichar Basin where commercial oil deposits have already been confirmed.

“The Kodos-1 exploration wildcat in Block 10BB is the first well drilled in the Kerio Basin, northeast of the successful South Lokichar Basin,” it said.

When Tullow Oil announced Twiga-2A in Block 13T located in Turkana, it had established oil can flow at nearly 10,000 barrels per day “demonstrating excellent reservoir deliverability.”

At Ngamia-4 there was a net of 120 metres of hydrocarbons, of which 80 meters was oil. Appraisals are ongoing.

Tullow Oil said it was continuing with exploration and well-testing.
