Mombasa’s Sh400million main fresh produce market in Kongowea is set to operate for 24-hours to cater for strong demand by traders in East Africa, governor Hassan Joho has said.
The County Government has also embarked on increasing the number of stalls within the facility to accommodate the influx of traders.

“It is our intention to transform Kongowea Market into a model market in East Africa that supports export trading hub for farm produce for the benefit of our people,” he said.
The County Government has also embarked on increasing the number of stalls within the facility to accommodate the influx of traders.
“We are also opening up feeder roads to ease movement while also improving the lighting system in order to create an enabling environment for doing business,” said Mr Joho when he went to inspect the ongoing construction works at the multi-million-shilling market.
Mr Joho said his intention is to transform the largest fresh produce market serving most counties at the coast into a model market in East Africa that supports export trading and also create a 24 hour trading hub for farm produce for the benefit of our people.
Kongowea Market, depends on food supplies from upcountry and Tanzania.
“The County Government a is also fast tracking the operationalisation of the materials recovery yard that will play a big role in helping us manage our waste,” added the governor.
The expansion of the largest fresh produce market in East Africa consist of a three-storey building which was opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2016.
Traders lauded Mr Joho’s move. “This will boost our businesses especially during the pandemic when the economy collapsed,” said Mr Jecinta Ngugi a potato trader.
