EDITORIAL: NTSA sticker plan welcome

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will from July start issuing electronic stickers capable of giving a vehicle’s registration details, motorists’ traffic offences and insurance status at a moment’s electronic query.
The tamper proof stickers, the authority says, will help cut cases of vehicle thefts and make our roads much safer.
This is good news made better by the announcement that the NTSA has opted to implement the system in phases and at the pocket friendly price of Sh700 per sticker.
So we have a system whose implementation appears well thought out and its potential benefits great for all stakeholders. However, its success is hinged on implementation by the relevant officers, in this case the police and NTSA officers.
And here lies our fear since the integrity of the officers is not beyond reproach.
We know of several road safety initiatives by the NTSA that have been turned into rent-seeking avenues by the conniving officers.
We can only hope that the authority has taken steps to insulate the system from such leeches.
Great initiatives should not be thwarted by a few greedy people.
