Water supply to the Nairobi suburbs of Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, Matasia and Ngong had been disrupted for a whole week by Friday, hitting 250,000 residents.

It is tied to a feud over unpaid electricity bill between Kenya Power and Oloolaiser Water and Sewerage Company, leading to a disconnection.

We ask the two parties to find a way of ensuring that the residents who pay rates and taxes are not exposed to diseases, especially at a time the country is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic whose antidote at this time is hygiene.

Just like other sectors have embraced changes during Covid, Kenya Power should find a better way of solving the problem of unpaid bills instead of taking a step that leaves the neighbourhoods worse off.

One way of doing this is through dialogue. While not advocating for mismanagement or non-payment of bills, we urge the parties to restore the flow since the consequences of having taps run dry for a long period would be more painful than owing the power utility a debt.

The water company is wrong in claiming that customers were consuming the commodity without paying their bills.

No, the firm must rework its systems to ensure those who don't pay, don't inconvenience the rest who pay.
