‘Business Daily’ writer wins award

A writer with the Business Daily, Evelyn Situma, was among journalists who were honoured for their exemplary reporting on children’s issues.

Ms Situma won the Children in Economics and Finance Award 2012 during the Children Rights Media Awards held in Nairobi last Friday.

The awards by Bubble Nest International celebrate journalists who exhibit exemplary reporting on issues and circumstances that affect the well being of children.

The awards were sponsored by CLAN, Bluechip Equity Capital, Philips Brand, Samsonite Brand and Manji Foods. Ms Situma’s winning entry, ‘‘Teach your children how to save’’, was published in March and tackled how to encourage children to save from an early age.
“Evelyn’s article demonstrated mentoring of children on money and financial literacy,” the citation by Bubble Nest International read.

The awards, now in their fourth year, attracted 480 entries compared to 157 entries last year.

Four other journalists from Nation Media Group were also feted with NTV’s Joyce Mbogho Mkwawasi scooping the overall ‘Journalist of the Year Award’ for her entry ‘‘Child Mothers’’.

Samora Mwaura won the feature article award for his article ‘‘A matter too weighty for children’ while Daily Nation’s Joy Wanja won the children’s health award” for her entry “Guess how old I am”.

NTV’s Irene Choge tied with Ann Wairimu of the People Daily in the “Children Environment award” category. Ms Choge’s entry was on how unhygienic situations affect a pupil’s performance.
