Air France raises Paris-Nairobi flights to five per week

French carrier Air France is set to increase flights from Paris to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from three to five times a week next year to tap increased business and tourism travel between the two countries.

The French national airline is ramping up its Kenya frequencies barely four months after it formally joined the Kenya Airways #ticker:KQ and KLM joint venture and launched direct flights between Nairobi and Paris after an 18-year hiatus.

It presently flies three times a week between the French and Kenyan capitals.

“Beginning on March 31, 2019, flights will operate every day except Tuesdays and Saturdays,” said the airline in a statement. It said it will operate the route using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft that has a 276-passenger capacity with 30 seats in business class, 21 in premium economy and 225 in economy. “We are back on the route because of the growing economic ties between the two countries,” Air France Senior Vice President Africa, Frank Legre said earlier in March.

Kenya Airways has applied to the competition watchdog to expand its joint venture agreement with KLM to include Air France. The pact provides for commercial ties between Kenya Airways, KLM and Air France based on reciprocal code sharing on the joint venture routes.

The deal also includes alignment and co-ordination of network management including terms of routes, schedules and capacity, and alignment and co-ordination of management of revenues.

The revised deal will also allow the three carriers to conduct concerted marketing and sales activities.

KLM and KQ entered into a “master co-operation agreement” in 1995, which has seen them share revenues on certain routes based on a pre-determined ratio after deducting expenses.
