General Electric Company (GE) and its partner, AMU Power are being accused of misleading the public about the project's environmental safety.
Activist Okiya Omtatah has sued American Conglomerate General Electric Company (GE) and its partner, AMU Power, over their coal plant project at the coastal town of Lamu.
The activist, who is listed as petitioners alongside Nyakina Gisebe and Mathew Okwanda, accuses the firms of misleading the public about the project's environmental safety, arguing that the project is hazardous and should be discontinued.
The activist, in a suit filed in Nairobi Court wants the project suspended and the matter referred to the Chief Justice to appoint at least three judges to hear the case, noting that it raises issue of substantial question of law.
“Whereas there is nothing known as clean coal, the respondents are deliberately misleading the Kenyan public so as to hoodwink the Kenyan public that their impugned Lamu coal fired power project is harmless,” claims the activists.
He says the firms are misleading the public noting that “it is totally false to state that the GE‟s so-called ultra-critical coal technology makes coal clean.”
They claim that the firms have been trading in shares of the Lamu coal plant despite an order by environmental tribunal suspending any activities around the project pending determination of a petition.
