  • Death of Mohinder Singh Vohra a big blow to the industry.

Kenyan hoteliers and the Vohra family were Monday still coming to terms with the tragic loss of Mohinder Singh Vohra (MS) and four family members in a road accident.

Vohra was a cofounder of Kenya’s hotels chain, the Sarova Group.

He died on Sunday alongside his wife Swaran, his daughter Reena and his daughter-in-law and board director Atu Vohra.

Ms Atu was wife of the late Sarova Hotels managing director, J.S Vohra, who also died in a car crash along the same road. Ms Reena was sister to JS, while Mohinder Singh Vohra and Ms Swaran Vohra were his parents.

“This is a tremendous loss to the Sarova family and the thoughts and prayers of the board of directors, management and all Sarova Hotels & Resorts staff go out to the Vohra family,” said John Ngata Kariuki, Sarova board of directors chairman.

Final prayers for the deceased will be held at Sikh Temple in Pangani, Nairobi on Thursday after which the cortege will leave for Hindu Shamshan Bhumi, Kariokor, for the cremation.

“This is a very big blow to the Sarova family as well as the hospitality industry. As industry we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family and pray that the Lord will give the dearly departed a peaceful rest. We also pray for the comfort of the family members who have been left behind and particularly Atu and JS’s sons, Saveer and Saman,” said Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers chief executive Mike Macharia.

The young Vohra who was reported to have been driving the vehicle was airlifted and admitted to Aga Khan hospital.

The Vohra family has been instrumental in the growth of Kenya’s tourism and hospitality industry. In 1974, the Vohras acquired the Ambassadeur Hotel on Moi Avenue, Nairobi, in partnership with the family of Mr Kariuki, former Kirinyaga Central MP.

The partnership led to the birth of Sarova Group, starting off with a single property in Nairobi to having one of the largest collection of properties in the country.

The hotels, resorts and game lodges under the group include Sarova Stanley and the Sarova Panafric in Nairobi, the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa and Sarova Mara Camp in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The group’s latest property is Sarova Woodlands, a Sh1 billion five-star hotel in Nakuru that opened last year.
