Coffee house Java is set to open two new branches in Nairobi’s central business district early next year as the company ramps up the expansion strategy it embarked on last year.

Java has booked space at ReInsurance Plaza on the ground-floor previously occupied by Walker’s, and at Embassy House.

This will raise the number of the shops to 45. “It is true that we will be opening a Java in the space at ReInsurance Plaza previously occupied by Walker’s and at Embassy House, just off Harambee Avenue,” said Nairobi Java House group CEO Kevin Ashley.

“Both of these sites should be open and trading in early 2016,” he said. The coffee house will also open 10 more coffee outlets across Kenya and Uganda and additional branches of the sister brands, Planet Yogurt and 360 Degrees Pizza.

Focus on counties

In an earlier interview, the group said that it had invested $7 million ($707 million) to grow its reach next year. Additional outlets will be located in Nairobi, Eldoret, Thika, Nakuru and Nanyuki as the company shifts its focus to counties. It will also open four outlets in Uganda through its Java Coffee and Tea subsidiary.

Last year Java announced plans to invest between $4 million (Sh404 million) and $5 million (Sh505 million) to open new outlets.

The coffee house has since opened branches across the country including one along Mama Ngina Street, another at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and one in Kisumu.

American private equity firm Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) bought a majority stake in Java in 2012 and the capital injection enabled the coffee house to fund growth.
