Kenyan innovators stand a chance to win up to $50,000 (Sh5 million) in American multinational Johnson & Johnson’s second edition of Africa Innovation Challenge.

Josh Ghaim, Chief Technology Officer at Johnson & Johnson, said the challenge aims at tapping into the growing number of innovation hubs throughout Africa to offer solutions to emerging challenges.
“Our goal with the second Africa Innovation Challenge is to expand our support for the region’s entrepreneurs by pushing the boundaries of creative solutions to meet several areas of urgent need,” said Mr Ghaim. Areas being targeted are botanical solutions, packaging innovations, mental health, health worker support, digital health tools and essential surgical care.
Submissions are open to all African countries and from one or more individuals, teams or companies; subject to eligibility requirements set out in the terms and conditions for the challenge. The deadline for submitting applications is January 16, with award recipients expected to be announced thereafter.
The first challenge, launched in November 2016, focused on three health areas: promoting early child development and maternal health; empowering young women; and improving family well-being. The three winning concepts were from Burundi, Uganda and Liberia.
