The new category known as Jumia Fresh will make available fresh vegetables, fruits and meat through a partnership between the portal and produce suppliers in Nairobi.

Technology is changing how Kenyans are doing their shopping with several platforms allowing consumers to select, order and pay for items from a mobile phone.

This has increased the products available on online platforms from the initial electronics and beauty to a wider range of homeware and even fresh produce.

Jumia has been expanding its offerings by partnering with different suppliers including supermarkets and retail stores, leveraging on the existing stock and customer goodwill to boost sales on the platform.

Last year, Jumia partnered with Tuskys to offer shoppers a selection from the supermarket’s network of more than 50 stores nationwide.

Tuskys has been selling some of its products, which include furniture, electronic appliances and baby care goods on Jumia.

According to Jumia’s latest results, sales grew 41.8 per cent to Sh62.95 billion on the back of higher customer numbers. The number of products available on the platform increased from 50,000 in 2012 to more than five million in 2017.

The e-commerce platform has seen increasing completion as locally owned Orion Online Mall has entered the Kenya online shopping space, early this year. Orion has indicated that it is facilitating the purchase and sale of goods online including electronics and groceries.
