The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has appointed Sachen Gudka as the new chairman on a two-year term, replacing Flora Mutahi who was has moved to head the Anti-Counterfeit Agency.

Gudka’s appointment on Thursday comes as the manufacturers’ lobbying body seeks to play a key role in the government’s efforts to increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP growth to 15 per cent by 2022.

The manufacturers’ body is currently partnering with the German Co-operation for International Development (GIZ) to bridge the technical skills gap in the industry helping local companies absorb technical interns.

The programme started last year and has so far seen 290 interns get jobs in local firms besides training another 350 on job preparedness ahead of planned industrial attachment at factories across Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley and Coast by end of last year.

“This is a critical year for the manufacturing sector. We continue to inform critical policy development towards the realisation of the Big 4 Agenda, as well as inclusive and broad-based economic growth across the country”, Gudka said on Thursday.

The new chairman added that KAM remains committed to the TVET program that is a key strategy of the association’s efforts to develop skilled Kenyans who can produce internationally competitive products.

Gudka will be deputised by Mucai Kunyiha, a trained lawyer who is also the Group Managing Director of Kzanaka Limited.
