Troubled Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) says its September student intake is ongoing amid a restructuring process that has seen the institution slash over 150 employees from its payroll and close down two satellite campuses.

The varsity has moved to reassure parents and students that the review in its operations in Nakuru and Nyeri would not affect learning, saying it had acted to cut costs and respond to dynamics in the higher learning sector.

“These measures, among others being undertaken by the university, will enhance service delivery and effectively respond to the education trends in Kenya. Further, it will help KeMU remain true to its mission of transforming our society through provision of quality education, scholarship and research,” it said in a press statement signed by Vice-Chancellor Prof Henry Kiriamiti Friday.

Termination letters issued to retrenched staff had blamed challenges to the economy for the move.

Sources that spoke to the Business Daily say the varsity's centre in Kisii was also shut down along with the Nyeri and Nakuru campuses.

The Meru-based university had earlier postponed its annual graduation ceremony that was to be held on July 22 to October 14 this year citing unavoidable circumstances.
