A Nairobi-based firm has launched a mobile app, uLima, to provide information to farmers across the continent.

uLima company CEO Sunesh Bhoola says the application is designed to provide farmers across Africa with a toolset, information libraries, database and access to the latest market information.

“With this app, farmers would make reference to best farming practices in the world, thereby increasing yields. The application is a tailor-made solution for each farmer in terms of crop calendars, thereby offering step-by-step assistance from pre-planting to post-harvest,” he said in Mombasa during the app’s launch.

The mobile app provides farmers with access to information on crops, seeds, soil, livestock, agro-chemicals, weather updates and market prices. Mr Bhoola said persistent drought and shortage of food in Kenya and in some parts of African countries motivated development of the app.

“Food shortage is one of the greatest challenges that need to be addressed, but we can take advantage of improved technology to make Africa a food stable continent,” he said.
