Kenyan based e-commerce start-up, Sky.Garden, has raised Sh122 million from Dutch and Norwegian firms to grow its business.

Sky.Garden, launched early last year, has received funding from Jesper Drescher associated with online shopping platform BeautyClick, TRK Group based in Norway, The Katapult Accelerator Follow-up Fund, and a syndicate of Danish Business Angels led by Futuristic.vc.

“We are thrilled to be receiving the continued support and recognition for our platform from such influential investors, especially in the highly competitive market that we are in,” said Sky.Garden chief executive officer Daniel Maison.

The online sales portal registered more than three thousand web shop owners and a listing of over 23,000 products from small and large business owners across the country.

“When we began this journey, we spoke with thousands of business owners from independent sellers selling out of their homes to registered businesses with physical stores in the city centre,” said Isaac Hunja, co-Founder and chief marketing office.

“From those conversations we identified a fundamental issue. These sellers did not have access to an easy-to-use, trusted, and accessible online sales channel that allowed them to manage their stock as they would in physical inventory.”

To use the platform, sellers are charged a flat rate of eight per cent per transaction to use the platform.

Last year Kenyan telco Safaricom #ticker:SCOM launched an e-commerce platform dubbed Masoko with 20,000 products from 160 vendors.

Kenya’s e-commerce sector is dominated by brands such as Jumia, Kilimall, OLX, Pigiame among others.

Safaricom and Sky.Garden are expected to face stiff competition from market leader Jumia, which boasts 5,000 vendors.

“We saw a huge opportunity in Kenya with its rapidly growing smartphone penetration and access to reliable data connectivity.

Every one of these sellers have a smartphone in their pockets, huge following on social media platforms, and amazing products to sell,” said Martin Majlund,  co-founder & COO.
