The off-grid power solutions market is attracting more players targeting households and small businesses in rural areas.
Norwegian firm W. Giertsen Energy Solutions (WGSES) has opened a regional office in Nairobi as it steps up its expansion in the southern Africa market.
The office will double up as the marketing and logistics centre for its operations across sub-Saharan Africa, with the company seeking to grow sales of its solar-powered lamps, street lighting and water pumps.

“We won’t be the cheapest but we will give good value for money,” Frank Mohn, the firm’s CEO, told journalists during the function that was also graced by Victor Ronnebgerg, the Norwegian ambassador to Kenya.
The multinational started supplying the Kenyan market in 2011 when it set up solar panels for the Dadaab Refugee Camp and has further installed four water pumps in Siaya, Mwingi and Ahero that are used by farmers. The solar water pumps cost about Sh9,000.
