Renault Kenya has said it has no immediate plans to assemble its cars in Kenya, four years after it re-entered the local market.
The French carmaker, which launched its Renault Koleos brand in Nairobi on Tuesday, says no timelines have been set yet for local assembly.

“Since our return to Kenya, we have invested Sh1.8 billion and have so far sold 254 new vehicles. We are talking with our partners and shall soon disclose the details of the assembly line pact which is a long-term plan to enable Kenyans to buy cheaper Renault brands,” said Renault country brand manager Jonathan Santos on Tuesday.

The new Renault four-wheel luxury vehicle will retail at Sh6.2 million.

“We have delivered three vehicles to their owners and a fourth one has been paid for and will be delivered next week to its owner,” he said.

Mr Santos said Renault plans to open more after-sales and service centres across the country to enable customers to access genuine spare parts. The auto firm currently has aftersales outlets in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Kisii.

Carmakers assembling their vehicles locally include Mobius which launched in 2009, Volkswagen Group, Foton East Africa and Toyota Kenya while Peugeot is completing its assembly plant in Nairobi.

GM East Africa is the oldest local assembler of its various Isuzu brands while Sweden’s Volvo trucks-maker is setting up a Sh2.58 billion assembly plant in Mombasa with a capacity produce 4,500 trucks for sale in the entire East African region.
