Telecoms firm Safaricom has appointed career finance expert Rose Ogega to its board as an independent non-executive director.

In a notice to the Capital Markets Authority, the telco announced that Ms Ogega would take the seat with effect from February 12.

“We write to inform you that at the Board of Directors’ Meeting that was held on 12 February 2019, the Board approved the appointment of Mrs Rose Ogega as an Independent Non-Executive Director in the Company’s Board with effect from 12 February 2019,” read the notice signed by Safaricom company secretary Kathryne Maundu.

Ms Ogega has worked at audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and DHL International before venturing into entrepreneurship. She is the managing director of Bloom Consultancy Limited.

She has served on various boards including Barclays Bank, UAP Old Mutual Group and Centre for Corporate Governance. She was also the inaugural chairperson for the Women Enterprise Fund advisory Board.

During her tenure, she has chaired the audit and risk committee at Barclays and UAP, served as board chairperson Old Mutual Investment Services as well as a board member Old Mutual Investment Group.

Her appointment follows the retirement of corporate governance consultant Susan Mudhune in September last year after nine years on the board of the Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm.

Ms Mudhune was among top shareholders with directorship positions at Safaricom with 51,200 shares, coming just behind chief financial officer Sateesh Kamath who increased his stake to 100,000 over the course of a year.

In June, Ms Mudhune was sworn into the Kenya Revenue Authority board alongside chairperson Francis Muthaura and fellow members Charles Makori Omanga and Leonard Ithau.
