What you need to know:

  • OLX country manager Peter Ndiang’ui attributed the increase not only to the vehicle peak season, which took off last October but also to the close of electioneering period that stabilised the trade in cars on its platform.

Online advertising site OLX has recorded a 10 per cent increase in the number of second-hand car searches on its platform in the last two months.
OLX country manager Peter Ndiang’ui attributed the increase not only to the vehicle peak season, which took off last October but also to the close of electioneering period that stabilised the trade in cars on its platform.

“As 2017 came to a close, the vehicle industry dynamics changed in Kenya as in most markets owing to the business targets to be met by manufacturers and car dealers alike,” he said. “It is also during this period that discounts are offered to lead to an increase in the number of cars being sold locally at a slightly cheaper price.”

Vehicles over eight years old are not allowed into Kenya as per Kenya Bureau of Standards regulations that are enforced by the Customs department.

Last year, only vehicles that were manufactured in 2010 onwards were allowed into the country.
