Local carrier Silverstone Air is set to introduce daily flights between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara next week, raising competition for customers on the route that is already served by Fly-Sax, Safarilink and several other carriers.

Silverstone Air says the daily return flight, which will take off from Wilson Airport, will also be connecting to various airstrips, including Serena, Mara North and Keekorok, targeting leisure travellers on the northern circuit.

The airline was until last October operating as a charter carrier but stepped up to offer commercial flights from Nairobi to Kisumu, Ukunda, Lamu and Malindi.

“We will be launching scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Maasai Mara next week on Thursday,” said Captain Mohamed Somow, the airline’s managing director.

“The departure time from Wilson Airport to Maasai Mara will be at 11:00am. The plane will then leave Maasai Mara at 12:15pm to arrive in Nairobi at 1:00pm and we will be charging about Sh29,500 for a return trip,” he said.

Silverstone Air is a fairly new entrant and has been on an expansion mode barely six months since it established operations in the Kenyan market.

In April the airline increased frequencies on the Nairobi to Kisumu route to 17 trips per week, up from 14, while passengers travelling to Mombasa from Kisumu are now served by three weekly flights, an increase from two.

The carrier’s passenger flights target tourists from the Western and Coastal regions charging between Sh4,500-Sh10,000 for a one-way ticket between Kisumu and Mombasa.
