Online taxi-hailing company Taxify says it has suspended a driver and launched an investigation into claims that he had sexually harassed a female passenger in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Estonian firm said in a statement that it was in touch with the passenger and had deactivated the driver from its platform to allow room for investigation into the incident.
The intervention by Taxify comes days after the passenger tweeted that the driver touched her inappropriately while she was riding in his car.
“I took a Taxify home last night & I fell asleep in the car. The driver tried to put his hand up my skirt (and I was in the back sit) I woke up immediately and asked him what he was trying and he got so defensive,” she tweeted last weekend.
In its response, the firm says it is ‘deeply concerned by the recent allegations and reports of sexual assault on our platform’, noting that it is committed to passengers and drivers safety.
“The case was immediately flagged and attended to by our high priority response team, who are investigating the complaint to ensure that the right action is taken. Our customer support team has since contacted the rider and the reported driver who has since been deactivated from the platform to leave room for investigation,” reads the statement signed off by Taxify Country Manager Alex Mwaura.
Digital taxi apps have recently come under fire as female riders face security challenges while using their services.
They have been accused of taking a lackadaisical approach to both driver and passenger safety.
