Ways to turn your fears into self-assurance

What you need to know:

  • Failing is temporary whereas being a failure is permanent: It is important to realise that failure is not the opposite of success; it is a part of success, when you learn to embrace it and learn from it you stand a better chance of thriving.
  • Failing is a setback whereas being a failure is a mindset: In failure rather than choosing not to be what happened to you, focus on what you choose to become.
  • Failing shows you are stretching yourself and pushing limits, whereas being a failure shows you have given up: Failure and setbacks are ingredients of a great story.

A marine biologist was involved in an experiment with a shark. He placed a shark in a tank along with other small bait fishes. As expected, the shark ate every fish.

The biologist then used clear fibreglass to divide the tank into two sections.

He placed the shark in one section and smaller fish in the other. The shark quickly attacked and bounced off the fibreglass.

The shark kept repeating this behaviour. It just couldn’t stop trying. The small fish in the other section remained unharmed and carefree. After about an hour, the shark finally gave up.

This experiment was repeated several dozen times over the next few weeks. Each time, the shark got less aggressive.

Eventually the shark got tired and stopped attacking altogether. The biologist then removed the fibreglass.

The shark, however, didn’t attack. It had been trained to believe in the existence of a barrier between it and the fish.

Many of us, after experiencing setbacks and failures, emotionally give up and stop trying.

Like the shark, we choose to stay with past failure and believe that we will always be unsuccessful.

We build a barrier in our heads, even when no real barrier exists between where we are and where we want to go. Don’t give up. Keep trying because success may be just a try away.

Failing is temporary whereas being a failure is permanent: It is important to realise that failure is not the opposite of success; it is a part of success, when you learn to embrace it and learn from it you stand a better chance of thriving.

Failing shows you are stretching yourself and pushing limits, whereas being a failure shows you have given up: Failure and setbacks are ingredients of a great story.

Remember, comebacks are greater and stronger than setbacks. Failing is a part of the journey whereas being a failure is the end of the journey: When you make failures, setbacks and disappointments part of your journey, the path becomes less stressful and gives you a sense of security and strength.

Don’t go harsh on yourself when you face challenges and hurdles, simply tune in and listen to yourself. Failing is an opportunity to learn and grow, whereas being a failure is turning your back on learning and growth: Failure keeps you grounded, whereas success may at times sweep you away. Your commitment and determination are your true companions who can help you go a long way during your journey.
