Kenyan firm set to represent Africa at world start-up contest

Taz Technologies, the Kenyan startup behind M-Post innovation, is set to represent Africa at the global stage after winning at South Africa Innovation Summit.

The summit, which is a competition for startups featured 25 finalists that showcased their innovation and ideas before a select panel.

M-Post will represent the continent at the Startup World Cup that will be held in San Francisco, US, in May 2019.

“This win crowns our journey of resilience and focus. We are privileged to carry the Kenyan and indeed African flag to the Startup World Cup,” said said Abulaziz Mohammed, the chief executive officer of Taz Technologies.

Startup World Cup grand finale will bring together the firms from North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia and link them up with well-known speakers and judges from the tech community for a full day of networking and competition.

Taz Technologies’s win comes barely two months after the startup was selected among 10 African tech startups that each secured Sh1.7 million ($17,500) in funding and access to partners and mentors.

It was the only startup from Kenya that was selected to participate in the Startupbootcamp (SBC) AfriTech a -multi-corporate backed accelerator programme.

The accelerator programme unveiled in 2010 scouts for top-tier tech startups to join the three-month accelerator.

Mpost -a service that turns mobile phones into formal postal addresses- recently introduced a pick-n-drop feature allowing seamless delivery of items.

Taz Technologies unveiled the mobile application in the in the flagship product to compliment the USSD platform it has been operating on since it launched in the Kenyan market two years ago.

The app allows customers to acquire a virtual postal address, renew subscription and request for delivery of items from the post office.

Barely two years after its launch, MPost won five continental awards, registered thousands of Kenyans to the virtual postal services and created digital jobs through the Pata Ajira na M-Post initiative.
