Look past your imperfections to always be happy

It was a regular practice for a group of villagers, friends for 20 plus years to sit every evening on a large open porch and chitchat. This was their routine for very many years to sit and discuss about everything that happened that day. This has been a practice that they followed for many years. As usual, one day they were sitting and discussing; once upon a time, there was a small town. There lived a man by himself who couldn’t see. He was blind. Yet, he carried a lighted lamp with him whenever he went out at night.

One night as he was coming home after having a dinner outside, he came across a group of young travellers. They saw that he was blind yet carrying a lighted lamp. They started passing comments on him and made a fun of him. One of them asked him, “Hey man! You are blind and can’t see anything! Why do you carry the lamp then?!”

The blind man replied, “Yes, unfortunately, I am blind, and I can’t see anything but a lighted lamp which I am carrying is for the people like you who can see. You may not see the blind man coming and end up pushing me. That is why I carry a lighted lamp”.

The group of travellers felt ashamed and apologised for their behaviour.

Don’t judge

Be happy with your imperfections: It is easier to be happy if you look beyond your imperfections rather than seeking happiness by trying too hard to make everything perfect.

Don’t judge others’ imperfections: Don’t judge people by their imperfections.

If at all you have to, judge them by rising above their imperfections. Judge less, trust more: Everyone has untold stories of joy and sorrow, of pain and pleasure. Everyone’s story is unique and different from the other.

If you can, try and see them from their perspective Complaining never makes anything better: Stop spending the whole of your today by complaining about your yesterday, because that won’t make your tomorrow any better. Your action today is the only thing that’s going to make tomorrow better.

Practice gratitude: Life would be better and beautiful when you stop moaning about the problems you have and express gratitude for the problems you don’t have.

The imperfections that the blind man had did not deter him from going out and being a part of the world. Instead he chose to wisely do things that are in his control, rather than expecting others to be considerate towards him.
