What you need to know:

  • Don’t take it all on yourself, encourage your teams to take ownership.

A group of 50 people attended a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and started giving each person a balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker.

Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room. Now these delegates were let in that room and asked to find the balloon which had their respective names written on within five minutes. It was utter chaos.

None found their own balloons. Each was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloons. The speaker began: This is exactly what is happening in our lives.

Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all over the place, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Help them find theirs.

“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success,” said Henry Ford.

Here are five things you can do as a leader to achieve at your workplace:

Always keep together

1. Team work makes dreams work: You fail when you stop working together. Real success comes when team members have a common dream.

2. Be open to diverse perspectives: Teams when encouraged to have difference of opinion and perspectives, contribute better. Often more than not, it is not the difference in opinion that create conflicts, but the wrong tone used that creates conflict.

3. Adapt to a culture of participation: Create an environment where you share similarities and celebrate differences. 4. Generate commitment by creating a sense of belonging: Teams who have a sense of belonging commit more. Encourage commitment by creating more opportunities to hold stake in the results.

5. It takes both sides to build the bridge: Don’t take it all on yourself, encourage your teams to take ownership. Teams that take ownership are likely to contribute better and be more successful. A lot of problems in the world would come to an end, if we talk to each other rather than about each other.
