Zetech University has launched a club aimed at equipping students with digital skills to enable them earn an income amid growing demand for workers on online platforms.

The Zetech Ajira Digital Club will empower students to build their online presence as well as train them in identifying scams.

The club has been launched in line with Ajira, a government project recently initiated by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to bridge the gap between skills demand and lack of jobs.

Dean of Student Affairs at the University Elizabeth Muhia asked students to register to join the club, saying the Government’s initiative will help reduce the rate of unemployment in the country

“This digital programme is a welcome development targeted at empowering young people to build online presence and skillfully undertake various online jobs. We are recruiting students from our various faculties to participate, build their skills and earn some money,” she said.

Zetech University vice chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene said unveiling of the club is timely given the growth in technology and the vast opportunities online work presents to the youth.

“The University supports the initiative to create digital work and raise the profile of online jobs as a way to provide employment. Our students will take advantage of the opportunities to secure employment and meet their basic needs,” said Prof Munene

Aside from training in digital skills, the students will benefit from mentorship by experts in order to enhance acquired skills and access online jobs.

They will also be trained on how to avoid scams given that scammers are getting more sophisticated and devising new ways of taking advantage of job seekers.

One of the aim for scam games is to collect confidential information to use for identity theft, to get their victims to cash fraudulent cheques or to wire/send money and to get victims to pay for services or supplies.

As such, the trainees at Zetech Ajira Digital Club will be taught how to ascertain authentic links to relevant online jobs.
