Victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) have a reason to smile following a government initiative to offer restorative surgery in the country at subsidised rates.

The corrective surgeries scheduled from Tuesday up to May 13 will see 40 women and girls from Kenya and Tanzania with complicated genitalia pay Sh10,000 for the procedure which otherwise costs about Sh500,000.

Already 15 victims have undergone the procedure at Mama Lucy Kibaki and Karen Hospitals, Nairobi.

“It is a daycare. The patients can walk home after the surgery,” said Dr Bernard Muia, the Nairobi county Health executive. “This undertaking is welcome for FGM victims with complicated genitalia, which can lead to complications during labour among other social problems.”

Dr Muia said they aim at conducting two group surgeries annually in partnership with US-based Clitoraid and Garana, a local NGO.

The core team includes Clitoraid’s gynecological surgeon Marci Bowers, Dr Abdullahi Adan, a plastic reconstructive surgeon, and Dr Tammary Esho, a Kenyan sexologist.

Clitoraid’s International Director of Operations, Nadine Gary told the Business Daily that they had received about 100 requests from victims locally in the past two years, which informed their mission to Kenya.
