The platform which currently has 10,000 vendors is banking on the Black Friday shopping season that is set to commence from November 2.

The month-long season is normally characterised by a buzz of activities at Jumia’s warehouses as online shoppers enjoy better deals.

“Jumia aims to grow its vendor base from the current 10,000 to 15,000 by 2019. This year’s Black Friday will feature discounts of up to 70 per cent off on over one million products” said Jumia chief executive Sam Chappatte.

Shoppers are set to enjoy free delivery for purchases made and paid using Visa as well as free Orders for new customers to Jumia for Coca Cola bottles.

Mr Chappatte said this year’s Black Friday is expected to be twice as large as last year’s given the strong growth registered in e-commerce.

He made the remarks at the annual Black Friday Vendor Event that brings together over 500 vendors in Nairobi in preparation for the Black Friday sales campaign.

Trade Ministry Permanent Secretary Chris Kiptoo addressed the vendors on the impact of e-commerce on employment in the country.”

“Even as Kenya leads globally in the share of internet traffic at 83 per cent — coming from mobile phones overtaking Nigeria at 81 per cent, which was at the top in 2017 — SMEs must take advantage the young techno-savvy youth with smartphones as the new breed of customers in town,” he said.

Dr Kiptoo said the government plans to help digitise small and medium businesses in the next few years to boost national productivity and transform the economy.

The smartphones penetration rate currently stands at 29.6 million and is expected to rise to 35 million by 2025, according to mobile economy report.

“This sets the ground for prosperity of e-commerce in the country with affordable smartphone and accessible internet for this breed of customers,” he said.

A joint report by the Communications Authority of Kenya and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that an estimated 27 per cent of firms in Kenya sell their products online.
