Huawei Kenya has launched a 10-day training programme for lecturers from 12 local universities.

Through Huawei Authorised Information and Network Academy (HAINA), the programme emphasises the need to prepare students for the job market by building their ICT skills through proper training.

HAINA is a partnership between Huawei and academies around the world.

Through such partnerships, the academy trains selected participants in Huawei ICT technologies, encourages students to get Huawei certification, and develops talents with practical skills for the ICT industry and communities.

“Skills transfer and partnerships are a key strategy for the State Department for University Education and this example shows how universities are partnering with leading multinationals to build the skills and employability of students,” said Huawei Senior Director of Public Affairs Adam Lane. Last year, Huawei partnered with Technical University of Kenya to provide cutting-edge technical skills for lecturers and supported them to train their students through HAINA.

The technology firm is now expanding the programme to reach more universities, their lecturers and students. The programme will enable universities to provide skilled workforce that employers need, and drive the economy.

The training will host 22 partners and focus on coaching lecturers on Huawei Certified Network Associate — Routing and Switching (HCNA-R&S). Institutions participating in the programme include Kenyatta, Nairobi, Riara, Daystar, Jomo Kenyatta, Multimedia, Dedan Kimathi, and Zetech universities.

Others are East African Institute of Certified Studies, Southern Eastern Kenya University, AFRALTI and the Slumcode Centre.

By the end of the training, lecturers from these institutions will have the necessary knowledge required to deliver Huawei certified courses to students pursuing related courses.

Globally, Huawei has cooperated with more than 350 universities and educates more than 12,500 students every year.

The Huawei academy has developed a range of ICT career certifications based on industry technologies and global practices.

In April, Huawei rolled out a programme for bridging the gender gap in the technology realm that will see more women advance in the IVT front.

The plan includes hiring and supporting female employees and providing internship for female students.
