Fishermen, sailors told to be wary of strong winds

Fishermen and sailors at the Kenyan Coast have been warned against navigating in the deep sea following an advisory on strong winds and high seas which are expected along the Indian Ocean.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry the strong winds and high seas are expected at the Kenyan waters at the Coast as from Tuesday to Friday this week.

The weatherman has also cautioned small vessels, fishermen and inexperienced sailors along Kenyan Coast. “Strong to at times very strong south to southeast winds and high seas are expected to prevail across Kenya Coastal Waters. Small craft advisory is in effect from Tuesday the 23rd through until 11PM local time on Friday,” read the urgent marine weather message from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The ministry said the winds are expected to be south to southeast with speeds of 15 to 24 knots and of gusts around 33 knots. The waves/seas will be of wave heights of six to seven feet near the shore with occasional seas of up to 12 feet. The waves will be nine to 12 feet high offshore with occasional seas of up to 15 feet. “Precautionary actions, a small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots, or wave heights of seven feet of greater, are expected to produce hazardous conditions to small craft,” warned the marine meteorological port office in Mombasa.

Inexperienced mariners or sailors especially those operating smaller vessels are cautioned against navigating in the conditions.

Fishermen and other mariners are also warned to pay close attraction to marine forecast and consider wind and sea conditions before going for their expeditions in the sea.

But fishermen led by their Wavuvi Association of Kenya chairman, Hamid Mohammed said they will go fishing because it is their livelihood.

“We have cautioned fishermen against fishing in the deep seas but we will go on and fish because that is our livelihood. We got the alert from the Kenya Meteorological Department but I urge Kenya Maritime Authority to use their boats during such emergencies to patrol the Kenyan waters,” Mr Mohammed said.

He however cautioned fishermen against fishing at night and at the high seas when the wind is stronger. Yesterday, Mombasa county and its environs near the Indian Ocean started experiencing the strong winds with showers.
