Huawei banks on Safaricom network to sell new phone

Chinese technology firm Huawei is leveraging on telephony provider Safaricom #ticker:SCOM retail network to push its new flagship device in the local market.

The technology maker Wednesday launched the Huawei Mate 10 Pro that will retail at Sh89,999 in Safaricom shops.

The smartphone market has been highly competitive with top brands as well as entry level types jostling for a share of the consumer market.

The new smartphone will be the first in the Huawei range with in-built artificial intelligence (AI) with a Kirin 950 chipset, a Leica dual camera, six-inch display and will be running on Android 8.

“One of the most advanced benefits of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is that it is an intelligent phone that continuously learns about its user’s phone behaviour in order to more accurately predict future usage patterns,” said Huawei Mobile Kenya Country director Derek Duh.

The partnership with Safaricom will see Huawei access the network of the more than 150 Safaricom stores in the country.

“We are honoured to partner with Huawei as they launch the Huawei Mate 10 Pro in the market. This occasion also gives us the opportunity to position Safaricom as the home of the latest smartphones,” said Elizabeth Wasunna, head of Safaricom retail channel.

According to a recent research by analytics company GlobalData Mobile Broadband Forecast, smartphone sales in Kenya will overtake those of feature handsets.

The forecast shows that by the end of 2022, more than 80 per cent of handsets in Kenya will be smartphones.
