American taxi-hailing firm Uber will today deliver on-demand ice cream to customers in Kenya in a marketing campaign aimed to attract more clients as the company faces more competition locally.

Uber Kenya has partnered with Delia All Natural Ice Cream, a product of the Limuru based Brown’s Company, to deliver the “Bits and Atoms” labelled dessert to its customers at Sh200 for two servings.

Partner taxi drivers in Nairobi and Mombasa cities will join 400 others found in 69 countries to mark the global ice cream campaign.

Uber is present in 475 cities spread across 75 countries. The ice cream campaign will leave out customers living in Thika, where Uber recently launched its service.

“UberIceCream is a global promotion that celebrates what we have in common, and gives us an opportunity to come together. We are thrilled to bring our riders this exciting experience and we hope riders will take a moment and indulge together,” said Uber sub-Saharan Africa General Manager Alon Lits.

The global ice cream campaign is seen as a marketing move as Uber tries to grow its customer base in the wake of growing global competition with Kenya teeming with nearly a dozen taxi apps.

Nairobi plays host to other players such as Mondo Ride, Little Cab, Taxify, Maramoja and Waytaxi who are also targeting corporate clients.

The online taxi hailing apps have a predictable pricing model where every trip is automatically and openly cost, helping users to budget for their travel expenses unlike regular cab drivers who quote their prices based on arbitrary spot negotiations with their clients.
