A technical error omitted the payment of leave allowance for 102,619 teachers in the January pay, the Teachers Service Commission says.

The commission said the money will be paid in February and linked the error to the implementation of the new salary structure in line with the 2017-2021 CBA.

The highest paid teachers, chief principals, are entitled to a leave allowance of Sh10,000 while the lowest paid get Sh4,000. The allowance is paid with the January salary as a one-off.

“Technical personnel are already working to align the leave allowance application to the new teachers pay grades in order to correct the technical error,” the TSC said.

“The commission undertakes to correct the anomaly in the February payroll and pay the correct rates together with the arrears accruing from the January underpayment.”

There are 312,060 teachers in the country. Implementation of the CBA started last July and will cost Sh54 billion.

The first phase of the salary increase cost Sh17 billion. A new pay structure with grades B5, C1-C5 and D1-D5 was introduced with B5 being the lowest, “C” mid-level and “D” the upper-level. Previously, teachers were graded in job groups G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q and R.
