Big Four agenda gets Sh191bn UN grant

What you need to know:

  • Kenya has signed the agreement for the UN’s Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) between 2018-2022 that has been aligned to the Big Four agenda.
  • The new framework, which identifies the priority sectors where the UN will channel its aid funds for four years, replaces the current $1.2 billion (Sh120.99 billion) programme which expires this month.

The UN will give Kenya $1.9 billion (Sh191.58 billion) in the four years starting July in grants largely to support projects in the four priority sectors in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy term.

Treasury secretary Henry Rotich signed the agreement for the UN’s Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) between 2018-2022 that has been aligned to the Big Four agenda.

The new framework, which identifies the priority sectors where the UN will channel its aid funds for four years, replaces the current $1.2 billion (Sh120.99 billion) programme which expires this month.

The new UNDAF represents at represents a 58.33 per cent over the previous programme that supported education, water, sanitation and HIV/Aids projects. Mr Rotich said the funds would be used for universal healthcare and job creation for the youth as well as improve governance, transparency and accountability.

President Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda aims to boost economic growth through spending, improving food security and rolling out universal healthcare, supporting manufacturing, and building affordable housing.
