The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued fresh warnings on the resurgence of a scam involving swapping of SIM cards by fraudsters to swindle money from unsuspecting mobile subscribers.
In the case of SIM card swap, a fraudster usually makes a call pretending to be an employee of a mobile network operator in order to gain access of mobile subscriber's their private details such as identity card or personal identification numbers.
The information allows them to swap the SIM and gain control of services such as money transfer, mobile and Internet banking or any other services that can be accessed through a mobile phone.
In a statement on Wednesday, CA director-general Francis Wangusi said the agency, through the National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre, has received reports involving theft of personal identification information through social engineering leading to SIM swap fraud.
