  • The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (Kuco) wants health workers’ allowance increased by Sh20,000 to Sh30,000 as public sector workers turn to strikes for better pay.

Clinical officers on Wednesday issued a strike notice in their push for more allowances and improved working conditions. The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (Kuco) wants risk and call allowances raised from Sh3,000 and Sh10,000 to Sh30,000 and Sh70,000.

The union wants health workers’ allowance increased by Sh20,000 to Sh30,000 as public sector workers turn to strikes for better pay.

Last year doctors got a hefty pay increase with the monthly pay more than doubling to Sh206,989 for the least paid — including allowances — after a three-month strike.

“We are not seeking an increment in our basic pay, we want to be compensated adequately for the work we do,” said Kuco secretary general George Gibore.

The clinicians also want the government to employ an additional 4,700 officers and a revamped comprehensive medial cover.

The government on Tuesday said it cannot meet the fresh demands amid pressure to curb the ballooning public sector wage bill to free resources for development projects.

The governors said they would need more resources to honour the deals.
