Residents of Nairobi will continue to bear heavy traffic after the completion of the upgrade of a 17-km Nairobi Eastern missing link roads into a dual carriageway was delayed again by one year.

The roads whose construction started in February 2016 was initially due for completion in April but has now been pushed forward to April next year.

“The public needs to know that relocation of services and other road users have caused a lot of delays in executing this project,” said the Kenya Urbans Roads Authority (Kura) acting director general Silas Kinoti.

“We are hoping that we will get the public more sensitised to know that when you actually hinder the progress of construction, you are doing a greater harm to majority of Nairobi residents.”

Mr Kinoti who was speaking to the Business Daily during an inspection tour of the road said they will continue negotiating with residents of informal settlements at Deep Sea area along the road to relocate to other grounds.

He accused London-based non-governmental organisation, Amnesty International and Hakijamii, a human rights organisation that works with local communities, for facilitating the locals to stay on the road.

“Our works has been hampered mainly by these two non-governmental organisation who are facilitating the stay of communities at Deep Seal informal settlement. They need to know that what they are doing is wrong.”

Nairobi Eastern missing links comprise the construction of 17km across Ngara (Accra to Ngara Road), Muratina Road (General Wanuinge to Thika Road) Ring Road Parklands (Waiyaki Way to Limuru Road to Thika Superhighway) and Quarry Road (Landhies-Park Road).

The links are set to ease congestion hotspots by linking the city’s arteries, such as Limuru Road to Waiyaki Way and Thika Road, and connecting Eastern Enterprise Road to Mombasa Road.

Nigerian contractor, Reynolds Construction company (Nigeria) Ltd is building the 4.5 billion project at a cost of 4.5 billion, grants from the European Union.

Works include installation of street lights with pavements constructed along the highway.

In addition, two new walking or cycling-specific routes will be built along Rabai Road and Lusaka Road.
