Counties bought drugs worth Sh4.76 billion from Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa) in the year to June 2016, a new report shows.

Kemsa said the supplies to counties increased by 16 per cent up from Sh4.09 billion in 2014/15.

“The continued growth in internally generated income is an indication of the success of the new business model adopted in the financial year 2013/14 in response to devolution of healthcare in Kenya,” Philip Omondi, Kemsa acting chief executive officer said in an audit report for the year ended June 30, 2016.

Health services were devolved in July 2013 in line with the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution.

The 47 county governments entered into contracts with Kemsa to supply drugs to the health facilities under their jurisdiction. The counties pay Kemsa for the medical supplies.

The agency however said the national government owes it Sh468 million.
